Packing 101
18
This overview highlights mandatory requirements and best practices for packing Atlas-registered shipments, ensuring safety, compliance, and protection of the shipper’s belongings.
Purpose:
Provide clear guidance for professional packers on carton standards, item handling, and prohibited items to maintain consistent quality and liability coverage.
Key Requirements:
-
Cartons & Materials: Setup cartons are required on all registered shipments. All cartons must be new, clean, uniform, and labelled in the top right-hand corner with detailed contents. Top and bottom should be lined with paper and sealed. Small parts must be kept in plastic bags or paper and clearly labelled.
-
Prohibited & Allowed Items: Liquids, plants, fresh foods, and ammunition are prohibited. Dry goods such as spices, dry pasta, and canned goods are allowed. Guns must be safetied and packed separately; drivers must be notified. Ammunition is never allowed.
-
Mattress & Bedding: Use brand-new 5 mm mattress bags for mattresses and box springs.
-
Packing Guidelines: Loose articles (books, shoes) must be wrapped in paper. Clothing should be hung in wardrobes; no loose items underneath (except linens). Dishes and books should be packed upright with paper bedding between layers. Dresser mirrors should be removed and packed in mirror cartons.
-
Appliances & Drawers: Ensure all appliances are emptied of oil, water, or food. Dresser drawers must be checked for weight; line tops if contents remain inside.
-
Inspections & Liability: Inspect packed-by-owner items for prohibited or improperly packed goods. Packers assume full liability once items are loaded.
-
General Best Practice: Provide a premium professional full packing service. Take pride in quality, care, and compliance; packers are critical for the safe delivery of the shipper’s belongings.
Key Takeaway:
Following these packing standards ensures compliant, secure, and professional shipment handling, protecting both the shipper and the moving company.
